Mitchell notches eighth tally in opening round action of MASCAC tournament

Westfield, Mass. – The sixth seeded Falcons of Fitchburg State University suffered a tough 2-1 setback to the third seeded Owls of Westfield State University this evening in opening round action of the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Soccer post-season tournament at Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Following a scoreless first half, Westfield State took the lead at the 73:23 mark as senior Ashley Levya (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) lofted a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her third goal of the season for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score in the 82nd minute of play when sophomore Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass./Millbury) deposited a shot inside the near post for her eighth tally on the year to make the score 1-1.

The Owls secured the victory with 40 seconds left in the regulation as freshman Jenn Rennich (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) settled a pass from senior Nicole Chretein (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and buried a shot into the net for her seventh marker of the year, resulting in the 2-1 final.

This evening's contest will the 27th meeting between the two squads on the pitch with the Falcons currently 5-20-2 when taking on the Owls.

Westfield State has won seven of the last eight contests against Fitchburg State, including a 4-1 decision earlier this season at Alumni Field.

Westfield State held a 27-8 margin in shots, while also finishing with a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In net, sophomore Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass./Nauset Regional) stopped a season best 19 shots for the Falcons in the setback, while senior Natalia Falcone (Sutton, Mass./Sutton) made five saves for the Owls in the victory.
