Women’s Volleyball Drops Season Opener To Anna Maria

Sylvester and Riccardi pace Falcons in 2017 season opener  

Paxton, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's volleyball team opened it's 2017 campaign this evening, dropping a 3-0 decision to the AMCATS of Anna Maria College at the Fuller Activities Center.

How It Happened

Anna Maria took the opening set by a score of 25-14 before adding a 25-11 victory in set two of the match. The AMCATS closed out the contest with 25-14 triumph in the third and final set to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Junior Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass./Everett) and freshman Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) paced the Falcons with a team best four kills each, while senior Serene Pease (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) chipped in with eight digs for the Green and Gold. Senior Kathryn McGroarty (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) was also solid for the visitors, adding a team-leading seven assists over the course of three sets.

For Anna Maria, sophomore Tierney Clancy (Meriden, Conn./Platt) led the way with a game-high 21 assists, while junior Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass./Spring field Central) added ten digs for the AMCATS. Junior Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) put for forth a solid effort as well for the hosts, finishing with a match high 11 kills.

Inside the Numbers

This is the tenth meeting between two schools. Falcons are 5-5 when taking on the AMCATS.

Anna Maria has won the last four matchups against the Falcons.

This evening's contest marked the first time the two schools squared off against each other on the volleyball court since October 31, 2002.

The Falcons hosts the Hawks of Becker College on Thursday for a match starting at 7 p.m. Anna Maria will travel to WPI on Wednesday for a contest starting at 6 p.m.
