Fitchburg State suffer 3-0 setback to Huskies: Fall 3-0 to Engineers in second match

Worcester, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's volleyball team returned to action this afternoon as it competed in a Tri-Match, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Huskies of Southern Maine University in the opener before suffering a tough 3-0 setback to the host Engineers of WPI at the Harrington Gymnasium.

Match One

Fitchburg State opened the afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision to the University of Southern Maine Huskies as sophomore Jessica Peirce (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter) lead the way for the Green and Gold with a team-best 15 digs, one kill and one assist, while senior Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass./Everett) added ten digs and one assists in the first match of the day for the Falcons.

Match Two

The Green and Gold took on the hosts Engineers of WPI in their second match of the day, falling 3-0 to the Crimson and Gray. Peirce had another stellar outing for the visitors, posting a game-leading 18 digs and two service aces, while sophomore Paige Anderson (Winchendon, Mass./The Winchendon School) chipped in with 11 digs and three kills to close out the tri-match.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest marks the fifth matchup between the two teams on the volleyball court with the Falcons 3-1 all-time when taking on the Huskies.

Fitchburg State won the first three meeting with Southern Maine before the Huskies collected a 2-1 victory on Oct. 8, 1984 in the last match up.

This afternoon's contest marks the 12th meeting between the two schools on the volleyball court with the Falcons 1-10 all-time when taking on the Engineers.

WPI won the first ten contest against Fitchburg State with the Falcons registering a 3-2 triumph in the last meeting on Oct. 3, 2002 at the Recreation Center.

Up Next

Falcons will travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday as they open conference play for a contest starting at 6:00 PM. Huskies will host the Bobcats of Bates College on the same day for a 7:00 pm start, while the Engineers will entertain the Beavers of Babson College on Tuesday evening as well (7:00 PM).
