Falcons Fall To Lasers, 3-0

Taylor and Beauvais notch five kills each for Fitchburg State in non-conference setback 

Newton, Mass. - The Fitchburg State Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Lasers of Lasell University in non-conference action this afternoon from the Lasell Athletic Center.

How It Happened

Lasell opened the first set with a 5-0 margin on a service ace from sophomore Jess Langan (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) before Fitchburg State cut the lead to 11-7 on point by sophomore Chloe Guzman (Pawtucket, R.I.). The Falcons would chip the Laser lead to 24-17 following a kill from sophomore Meredith Taylor (Reading, Mass.), but the hosts secured the first set on the following point, resulting in the 25-17 final.

In the second set, Fitchburg State erased a 9-2 deficit, cutting the lead to 8-5 on a service ace by senior Jaquelyn Manyak (Bolton, Mass.), Lasell went on an 8-1 run, capped by a service ace from newcomer Karissa Gaughan (Granby, Conn.) to take the second set 25.12.

The Lasers grabbed a 4-0 advantage in the final set with Langan delivering a service ace before the Falcons answered with kills from junior Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Emily Beauvais (Greenfield, N.H.) (4-2). Lasell closed out the third with a 4-1 run on a kill from sophomore Meg Roberts (Newington, Conn.), resulting in the 25-10, third set final to secure its second win on the season.

Inside the Numbers

Today's contest marks the first ever meeting between the two teams on the volleyball court.

Fitchburg State was led by junior Amy Coelho (Bellingham, Mass.) with a team-best eight assists, seven digs and one kill, while Taylor added five kills and four digs for the visitors

For Lasell, Langan finished with a match-best 19 assists, one kill, five digs and five service aces, while Roberts chipped in ten digs, seven kills and one assist

Falcons will host the Bison of Nichols College on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup, starting at 6:00 PM. Lasers will travel to Wentworth on the same date for a non-conference bout at 7:00 PM.
