Falcons Notch 3-0 Straight Sets Victory Against AMCATS

Anderson finishes with eight kills and ten digs for Fitchburg State in non-conference triumph 

Fitchburg, Mass. - The Fitchburg State Women's Volleyball team defeated the AMCATS of Anna Maria College, 3-0 in non-conference action this evening from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took a 10-6 advantage on a service ace from senior Emily Beauvais (Greenfield, N.H.) before Anna Maria cut the deficit to 10-9 on a block by freshman Ryann Hassett (North Oxford, Mass.). The Falcons secured the first set though on a pair of kills from Beauvais and a block from Beauvais and junior Paige Anderson (Winchendon, Mass.), resulting in the 25-13 final.

In the second set, the Green and Gold grabbed a 6-2 edge to start the set, but the AMCATS answered back with block from senior Hannah Mitchell (Pittsfield, Mass.) to make the score 12-8. Anna Maria would cut the lead to 20-17 on a Mitchell kill, but Fitchburg State secured the middle set as junior Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Kathryn Newcomb (Portsmouth, R.I.) connected on a block, while junior Amy Coelho (Bellingham, Mass.) added a service ace for the 25-17 win.

Fitchburg State took a 7-0 edge on a trio of kills by Anderson before Anna Maria responded with a point from freshman Ashley Sheehan (Medford, Mass.), but the Falcons capped the scoring with back-to-back service aces from sophomore Meredith Taylor (Reading, Mass.) , resulting in the 25-11 final set triumph.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest will mark the 11th meeting between the two teams on the volleyball court with the Falcons 6-5 all-time when taking on the AMCATS

Anna Maria had won the last four meetings with Fitchburg State, including a 3-0 decision last season at the Fuller Activity Center

Fitchburg State was paced by Riccardi with a team-leading 11 kills, three digs and one service ace, while Anderson added eight kills, ten digs, one blocking assist and one service ace

Senior Jaquelyn Manyak (Bolton, Mass.) was also solid for the Green and Gold, finishing with game-leading 17 assists, four digs and one service ace

For Anna Maria, freshman Bella Kozciak (Westfield, Mass.) collected six kills, one service ace and five digs, while sophomore Cara Bromley (Sutton, Mass.) chipped in with three digs, one kill, one solo block and one blocking assist.
