Volleyball Drops MASCAC Match to the Trailblazers


Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's volleyball team fell to the Trailblazers of MCLA 3-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

The first set opened with the Trailblazers scoring two in a row before a kill from sophomore Emily Gelinas (Westfield, Mass.) made the score 2-1. Trailing 20-7 the Falcons ripped off 6 straight points capped by a block from newcomer Samantha Mirra (Burlington, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 20-13. MCLA closed out the set on kill from Chloie Garber (Eagle River, Ark.) for the 25-14 final.

The back-and-forth action started right at the beginning of the second set. The Green and Gold pushed out to a 7-4 lead on another block by Mira, however the Trailblazers battled back to forge ahead 10-8 with a kill from Reagan Scattergood (Rhineback, NY). A kill from senior Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) had the Falcons back in it at 14-15. Knotted at 17-all the visitors closed out the set with a kill from Ezmeralda Albright (Loves Park, Ill.)

MCLA took an early 9-4 lead in the third set, but the Falcons capitalized on a defensive miscue to trail 9-7. The Falcons on the service of Sariah Dyer (Raynham, Mass.) moved the score to 14-13 midway through the match before MCLA would take a commanding 22-15 lead. Senior Leah Sheehan (Billerica, Mass.) would then serve for seven consecutive points to even the score at 22-22. The Trailblazers closed out the game with a 3-0 run for the match win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Meredith Taylor (Reading, Mass.) had a team-high 13 assists, while Gelinas had 7 kills
  • Garber had a game-high 12 kills for MCLA, while Natasha Stewart (North Andover, Mass.) had a match-high 29 helpers
  • This evening's contest will mark the 15th meeting between Fitchburg St. and MCLA on the volleyball court with the Falcons currently 9-6all-time when taking on the Trailblazers
