Fitchburg State Runs Strong At Worcester City Meet

Spano places sixth overall in men's race; Page records eighth place showing for women

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 27, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's and women's cross country team had a solid showing at the Worcester City meet this afternoon on the campus of Worcester State College. The men's team registered its best performance of the season, placing second overall in its 5K race, while the women turned in a fourth place finish in their 3K race.

            Sophomore Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) collected the top men's performance in the muddy terrain, finishing sixth overall with a time of 28:37. Junior Kyle Schaeffer (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) was also strong for the Falcons with an 8th place finish and a time of 28:42. Senior captain Phil McCormack (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) rounded out the top three for Fitchburg State with a 13th place and a time of 29:23, while senior Keon Valcourt (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) and junior Tim Wood (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) also ran solid.

            Freshman Katelyn Page (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) led the Fitchburg State women's team with an 8th place finish overall and a time of 22:09, while junior Stephanie Jarvis (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) turned in her third solid performance in a row, placing 10th overall with a time of 22:32. First year runner Linda Fortunato (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) completed the Falcon top 3 with a 26th place finish and a pace of 24:13.

            Fitchburg State will be in action again next Saturday as it participates in the Keene State College Invitational.
