Fitchburg State Competes At MASCAC Championship

Falcons men's team names three to MASCAC All-Conference team

WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 24, 2009) - The Fitchburg State cross country team competed hard at the MASCAC Championships hosted by Westfield State College this afternoon. The defending champion men's team posted 48 points for a second place finish this year, while the women's squad finished with 118 points for fifth overall.

overall for All-MASCAC honors.

On the men's side, three Falcons earned MASCAC All-Conference honors, with top-ten finishes. Junior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) was Fitchburg State's top finisher, placing sixth overall with a time of 27:14, while senior Kyle Schaeffer (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) and sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) followed closely. Schaeffer notched a seventh place finish with a time of 27:20, while Kibler grabbed an eight place showing with a 27:27 run.

Senior Tim Wood (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was the Falcons fourth runner to cross the finish line, posting a time of 28:01, while freshman Pat Lucas (Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) rounded out the Fitchburg State scorers with a 15th place finish and time of 28:09.

In the women's heat, graduate Rachel Boudreau (Westport, Mass./Westport) finished strong, posting Fitchburg State best women's finish with a time 20:59. The veteran runner finished 15th overall, while leading the Falcons in scoring. Sophomore Katelyn Page (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) and rookie Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) followed Boudreau in 25th and 26th place respectively as the duo finished seconds apart with times of 21:53 and 21:54.

Senior Linda Fortunato (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) continued to be consistent for the Falcons, turning in a time of 22:04 for 28th place, while classmate Stephanie Jarvis (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) rounded out the women's five scorers with a 40th place run and a time of 23:04.

The Fitchburg State men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action next weekend as it battles in the ECAC Championships on Saturday afternoon.
