Fitchburg State Runs At All-New England’s

Men place 37th at All-New England Championships; Women run at James Early Invitational

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 9, 2010) –The Fitchburg State men's and women's cross country hit the trails again this weekend as the men competed at the All-New England Meet in Franklin Park and the women competed at the James Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State.

The Fitchburg State men's team fared well this afternoon as the Falcons battled schools from the Division I, II and III level. The Falcons topped Division III rivals, UMass Dartmouth, WPI and Southern Maine, while finishing before Division II local, Assumption College.

Junior Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) finished in the top spot for the Fitchburg State men's squad, garnering a 93rd place finish with a time of 26:07. Senior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) finished just three seconds behind Kibler for a 97th place finish, while sophomore Will Lary (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock) ran strong at 27:36. Classmate Mike Grasela (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) was the #4 man for the Falcons, taking in a time of 28:44, while second year runner Pat Lucas (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) cracked the top five with a time of 29:17.

The Fitchburg State women's team also ran strong this afternoon, placing 18th among a field of 31 scoring teams. The Falcons showed vast improvement with an average time of 22:30 and were competitive among the MASCAC teams in attendance.

Sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) notched the Fitchburg State top finish of the afternoon, posting a time of 20:58 for 74th overall, while graduate Linda Fortunato (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) placed 91st with a time of 21:21. Junior Katie Page (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) continued her solid pace this weekend with at time of 21:28 , while senior captain Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) and junior Lisa Dias (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) wrapped up the top five with times of 24:05 and 24:36 respectively.

Fitchburg State will be back in action again next Saturday as it competes at Williams College starting at 11 a.m.
