Falcons Earn Sixth In Women’s Cross Country Poll

Fitchburg State women’s cross country collects 25 points MASCAC Coaches Poll

FITCHBURG, Mass. (August 26, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women’s cross country team earned sixth place in the 2010 MASCAC Women’s Cross Country Pre-Season Coaches Poll as announced by the conference office Thursday morning.

Westfield State captured seven first place votes to amass 63 points in taking the top spot in the poll, as the two-time defending regular season and conference tournament champion Owls outdistanced second place Worcester State’s total of 51 points, with the Lancers claiming the other first place vote. MCLA is next in third place with 44 points, while Salem State and Bridgewater State follow in fourth and fifth place with 42 and 38 points, respectively. Fitchburg State is next in sixth place with 25 points, while Framingham State and Massachusetts Maritime round out this year’s poll in seventh and eighth place with 17 and eight points, respectively.

The 2010-11 academic year marks the MASCAC’s 40th Anniversary, and throughout the year, the conference will honor numerous student-athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and other individuals who have had a profound impact in shaping the rich history and tradition of the member institutions that have comprised the league.

Earlier this summer, the MASCAC announced that it was changing its acronym to “Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference” to reflect the name change of six member institutions (Bridgewater State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Salem State, Westfield State and Worcester State) from College to University, effective October 26th. Though the institutional name changes will not take place officially until later this fall, the conference name change took place immediately.

In addition to the six universities listed previously, the MASCAC is also comprised of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Two other institutions, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Plymouth State University, are affiliate members of the conference in the sport of men’s ice hockey.
