Bob Murray - 2000 Inductee

Coach Murray built the women's volleyball program into a perennial powerhouse during the ‘80s and ‘90s. After serving as a junior varsity coach for three seasons, Murray was the head volleyball coach from 1980-1996 at FSC.

Coach Murray is the all-time winningest coach in women's athletics history at FSC, having complied 176 wins during his 17-year tenure. Having compiled 10 seasons of 10+ victories during his tenure, it was under Coach Murray's tutelage that the volleyball team compiled 18 wins in 1981, and then 19 wins in the 1985 campaign.

Furthermore, Coach Murray led his team to a MASCAC Tri-Championship in both 1990 (tied with Bridgewater State and Framingham State) and 1992 (Bridgewater State and Salem State).

Prior to coaching at FSC, Coach Murray served not only in the Army Air Corp. (now the U.S. Air Force) during W.W.II, but also with the Army Engineers in the Korean War. Having left high school early to serve his country, Coach Murray recently received his high school diploma in a special ceremony commemorating W.W.II veterans.

Even today, Coach Murray is still affectionately known as "Dr. Volleyball," in the city of Fitchburg. Coach Murray is still actively involved in the sport he loves, as last fall he began the new women's volleyball program at St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School.
