Fitchburg State Splits With Mass-Maritime, 3-1/11-0

Falcons post 3-1 victory in game one; fall 11-0 in game two

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 12, 2014) – The Fitchburg State baseball team earned a MASCAC split this afternoon as it hosted the Buccaneers of Mass-Maritime Academy at Riccards Field. The Falcons notched a 3-1 victory in game one before falling 11-0 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Fitchburg State received a strong pitching performance from freshman Kyle Cutler (Clinton, Mass.), who earned his first conference win of the season in going the distance for the Falcons. Cutler surrendered just four hits and one earned run over seven innings, while striking out four and walking three.

On the offensive end, juniors Patrick McMahon (S. Windsor, Conn.) and Pierce Hans (Washington Township, N.J.) each registered a one hit and one RBI for Fitchburg State, while Greg Downs (Marshfield, Mass.) finished 1-for-2 with an RBI for Mass-Maritime.

In the backend of the doubleheader, the Buccaneers coasted to an 11-0 victory, using a complete game pitching effort from Zac Cooney (E. Bridgewater, Mass.). Cooney went the distance for the visitors, limiting Fitchburg State to just four hits, as he struck out four and walked only one. Junior Ryan Magni (W. Springfield, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Falcons, yielding six hits and two runs over four innings of work.

On the offensive end, Bobby Rosano (N. Reading, Mass.) led the Bucs 11 hit attack, going 3-for-5 with a homerun three runs scored and four RBI, while Aidan Desrosiers (N. Attleboro, Mass.) finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Senior David Mason (Leominster, Mass.) registered the only multi-hit attack for Fitchburg State, finishing 2-for-3 with a double.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Monday as it visits Worcester State for a MASCAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
