Falcons belt out 15 hits behind seven strong innings from Kelley

AUBURN, Mass. (March 24, 2014) – The Fitchburg State baseball team belted out 15 hits and ten runs en route to its 12th victory of the season as the Falcons downed Newbury College, 10-0 in non-conference action this evening.

The Falcons improve to 12-3 on the season, while the Nighthawks fall to 7-7 on the year.

Junior Pierce Hans (Washington Township, N.J.) paced the Falcons offense, finishing 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored and one RBI, while classmate Clayton Beaulieu (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman Steven Drury, Jr. (Ashburnham, Mass.) each chipped in with a pair of hits, including a pair of triples, two runs scored and two RBI.

Junior Patrick McMahon (S. Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Joe Lyons (W. Roxbury, Mass.) also notched a pair of hits each for the Falcons.

On the mound, freshman Jake Kelley (N. Chelmsford, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the season, tossing seven strong innings on the night. Kelley yielded just five hits over his start, while striking out eight and only walking three. Sophomore Bob Mello (Medford, Mass.) and freshman Steve Martel (E. Hartford, Conn.) both worked a scoreless inning of relief, combining for three K’s to keep the shutout intact.

Fitchburg State (12-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will open up MASCAC play this Saturday as it travels to Salem State at 12 p.m. The Falcons will play as the home team.
