Falcons celebrate senior day with non-conference victory

 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dealt the Lynx of Lesley University a 6-5 setback in 10 innings this afternoon in non-conference action at Riccards Field.

In a pregame ceremony the Falcon recognized the 2018 senior class for their contributions to Falcons baseball. The players acknowledged were: #2 Drew Mazzeo (Leicester, Mass.), #4 Andrew Mooney (Framingham, Mass.), #8 Andrew Lessard (Peabody, Mass.), #9 Andrew Currie (Quincy, Mass.), #14 Sean Maki (Fitchburg, Mass.) and #37 Benjamin Chiasson (Maynard, Mass.)

How It Happened

With one out and the bases full of Falcons senior Andrew Mooney delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to short centerfield to give the Green and Gold a 6-5 victory.

The home team put a four spot on the board in the bottom of the first inning for a short lived 4-0 lead. Sean Maki singled to right field to plate Andrew Currie for the first run of the game. Next Nicholas Cordeau (Melrose, Mass.) doubled in a pair and scampered home on a throwing error two batters later for a 4-0 lead.

Lesley evened the score in the top of the second inning. Freshman Zach Rossi (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk to open the scoring. Next Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, NJ) plated the second run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Leo Diguilio (Bradley Beach, NJ) scored on sophomore Will Rhone's (Palmer, Mass.) single to right field. Rossi scored from third on a wild pitch for the fourth run of the inning.

FSU sophomore Matthew Pingitore (Rutland, Mass.) gave the Falcons a 5-4 advantage with a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, while Lesley added the equalizer on an unearned score in the top of the fourth.

Inside the Numbers 

Junior Alexander Bissanti (Franklin, MA) led the way with three hits followed by Cordeau (double, 2 RBI).

On the hill, FSU freshman Lucas Amico (Leominster, Mass.) earned his first victory, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk and two strikeouts in 5.2 innings of relief work, while junior Daniel O'Donnell Jr. (Clark, NJ) took the loss for the Lynx giving up one earned run on three hits in 1.2 inning of relief.

On Thursday the Falcons will travel to Salem State University for first round MASCAC conference play, first pitch is slated for 3:00 PM. Lesley will face Pine Manor College tomorrow at 3:00 PM
