Fitchburg State Tops Eastern Connecticut, 2-1 (2OT)

Di Terlizzi leads Falcons to sixth victory of season with game-winner

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 7, 2008) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team registered a 2-1 double overtime victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in Little East Conference action this afternoon at Elliot Field.

Senior Heather Di Terlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) paced the Fitchburg State attack, totaling three points on one goal and one assist, while freshman Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) connected for one goal.

Freshman Jaime Mugavero (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) posted the lone goal of the match for Eastern Connecticut State, while junior Dana McLaughlin (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall) added an assist.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring early in the first half as Bergeron connected for her first collegiate goal in the 22nd minute of the match off an assist from Di Terlizzi. The Falcons pressured the Warriors throughout the first frame seven shots, but junior goaltender Tia Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) posted four saves in the frame to tame the Fitchburg State attack.

Eastern Connecticut opened the second half with a quick score to knot the game at 1-1 as Mugavero tallied her first collegiate goal of a dish from McLaughlin. Fitchburg State continued to dominate the offensive front with an 8-4 advantage in shots, but Mucciarone silence the Falcon attack with six saves in the half to force overtime.

After one scoreless overtime period, Fitchburg State broke the 1-1 draw as Di Terlizzi collected her own rebound and deposited her fourth goal of the season to give the Falcons their sixth victory of the season.

Fitchburg State out-shot Eastern Connecticut 24-9 in the contest, with a 9-1 advantage in overtime. Sophomore goaltender Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) turned in a solid performance for the Falcons with six saves, while Mucciarone totaled 16 stops for the Warriors.

Fitchburg State (6-4, 4-2 LEC) is back in action on Thursday as it hosts Nichols College at 7 p.m. Eastern Connecticut State (2-8, 1-5 LEC) will host Wesleyan University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
