Fitchburg State Rallies Past Nichols, 2-1

To. Van Ahnen and Jacobs lead Falcons to fourth straight victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 9, 2008) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team registered its fourth consecutive victory with a 2-1 win over Nichols College in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Sophomore Torey Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) and classmate Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) rallied the Fitchburg State offense with one goal apiece, while seniors Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) and Heather Di Terlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) each added an assist.

Sophomore Eileen Clinton (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led the Nichols College attack, scoring the lone goal for the Bison.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring midway through the first half as Van Ahnen netted her first collegiate goal in the 15th minute of the match off a helper from Bartalamia. The Bison evened the match with a 1-1 score roughly 12 minutes later as Clinton connected for her fourth score of the season.

In the dead-even second half, both team possessed scoring threats with 12 total shots in the period. Fitchburg State collected the first scoring opportunity with back-to-back shots by Bartalamia and Di Terlizzi, but Bison goaltender Mary Kate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) registered two quick saves to keep the Falcons off the board. After 30 minutes of scoreless action, Fitchburg State broke the scoring silence in the 65th minute of the match as Jacobs tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Falcons a 2-1 edge.

Fitchburg State held a 15-13 advantage in shots, while Nichols totaled a 12-4 advantage in corners. Sophomore goaltender Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) notched ten saves in net for the Falcons, while Bednarz stopped five shots for the Bison.
