Saint Joseph’s Rolls Past Fitchburg State, 4-1

Bartalamia notches lone goal for the Falcons

STANDISH, Maine. (September 18, 2008) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team suffered a tough 4-1 setback to Saint Joseph's Maine in non-conference action this afternoon.

Senior Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) scored the lone goal for Fitchburg State, while freshman Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) chipped in with one assist.

Sophomore Kayla Nowell (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) led the Saint Joseph's offensive attack with two goals in the contest while junior Julia Ostrowski (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland Academy) and freshman Amanda Sebastiao (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) added one score apiece. Junior Alyssa Dunn (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and classmate Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, Maine/Telstar) were also solid with two assists.

Saint Joseph's opened the scoring midway through the first half as Nowell connected for her first goal of the contest off assists from Ostrowski and Kimball. Two minutes later, Nowell found the back of the net again to give the Royal Blue a 2-0 lead.

Fitchburg State fired back as Bartalamia netted her second goal of the season at the 28:15 mark, cutting the Saint Joseph's lead to 2-1. The Royal Blue responded five minutes later as Ostrowski recorded her seventh goal of the year before Sebastiao capped the game's scoring at the end of the first half to give Saint Joseph's a 4-1 lead.

Saint Joseph's out-shot Fitchburg State 13-5 in the contest with an 18-9 advantage in corners. Sophomore goaltender Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) totaled eight saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while freshman Megan Johnson (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) collected four saves in the shutout for the Royal Blue.

 Fitchburg State (2-2, 1-0 LEC) is back in action on Saturday as it hosts Worcester State College at 11 a.m. Saint Joseph's (3-1, 0-0 NAC) will travel to Thomas College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
