Westfield State Clips Fitchburg State, 2-1 (OT)
Bartalamia nets lone goal in Falcon setback
WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 22, 2008) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team was edged by Westfield State College, 2-1 in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference action this evening.
Senior Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury Memorial) led the Fitchburg State scoring with one goal in the match, while classmate Heather Di Terlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and sophomore Torey Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) chipped in with one assist each.
Senior midfielder Vicky Winson (Upton, Mass./Upton) lifted Westfield State to its ninth victory of the season with one goal in the match while junior Kate Moss (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) also added a score.
After a silent first half, Fitchburg State opened the scoring 12 minutes into the second half off a penalty corner. Bartalamia notched her fourth score of the season off assists from Di Terlizzi and Torey Van Ahnen. The Owls knotted the score with 6:26 remaining in regulation on an unassisted goal by Moss, who scored off a rebound scramble in front of the goal.
In the extra frame, Winson scored with 7:28 remaining in overtime to give the Owls a 2-1 comeback victory. Winson's game-winner came on a shot about ten yards to the right of the goal as she banked it off sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) to net the score.
Westfield State out-shot Fitchburg State 14-5 with a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman Amanda McCarthy (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) stopped two shots for the Owls, while Taylor Van Ahnen registered two saves for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (7-8, 4-5 LEC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Keene State at 1:30 p.m. Westfield State (9-5, 4-4 LEC) will travel to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday at 1 p.m.
