Fitchburg State Rolls Past Becker, 6-1

Jacobs becomes Falcons all-time goals leader with second consecutive hat-trick

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 7, 2011) – Senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) registered her second consecutive hat-trick this afternoon, leading the Fitchburg State field hockey team to a 6-1 non-conference victory over Becker College.

With three scores and seven points in the game, Jacobs became Fitchburg State's all-time goals leader with 39 career markers. The previous record of 36 was held by Amy Kosiewski, class of 1993. With seven points in the game, Jacobs also remains just five points shy of the program record, 105, also held by Kosiewski.

Trailing 1-0 in the first eight minutes of the match, Fitchburg State rallied back, posting three consecutive goals to close the half with a 3-1 advantage. Following a Hawks goal at the 7:35 mark, the Falcons came flying back as Jacobs sparked the charge with record breaking score. The senior captain ignited the Falcons three goal surge at 8:17, while classmate Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) and junior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) followed with back-to-back goals by 13:42.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its offensive pressure, finding the back of the net three more times for a convincing 6-1 victory. Jacobs again led the charge, tallying a pair of goals in the half, while Bergeron added her second score of the game with nine minutes remaining in regulation.  

Fitchburg State posted a remarkable 30-4 advantage in shots throughout the contest, including a 9-2 margin in penalty corners. In net, senior Taylor Begin (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) collected the victory over the first 35 minutes of work, while sophomore Rachel Mays (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) totaled three saves in her second half effort. Becker sophomore Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J.) had 13 saves in goal for the Hawks

Fitchburg State (2-1, 0-0 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Salem State at 10 a.m. Becker (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) will visit Clark on Saturday at 1 p.m.
