Jacobs nears program mark with four points in LEC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 10, 2011) – Senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) collected four points on the afternoon as the Fitchburg State Falcons earned their first Little East Conference victory with a 4-1 triumph over Salem State University.

Fitchburg State controlled much of the scoreless first half, totaling a 27-3 advantage in shots and 9-0 margin in corners, but the Falcons could not find the back of the net as sophomore goalkeeper Michaela Boyer (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) collected 17 saves in the first half alone. The Falcons had multiple scoring chances, including senior Megan Jacobs' (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) 11 shots, but the play of Boyer kept the game at a 0-0 deadlock.

In the second half, Fitchburg State ended its scoring drought, exploding for four goals over the first 20 minutes of play. Sophomore Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) connected for the game's first score, converting a shot from the left channel, while Jacobs put home a rebound just two minutes later for her seventh goal of the season.

Jacobs added her second score of the contest midway through the second frame, posting a break away marker at the 53:37 mark, while senior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) sealed the contest just five minutes later with her fourth goal of the season. Salem State added a goal late in the game as Stephanie Morrison (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) hit home for her first goal of the season, but the surge was too little, too late for the Vikings, who saw their record drop to 1-2.

Between the pipes, sophomore Rachel Mays (Somserset, Mass./Somserset) worked a scoreless first half for the  Falcons, totaling one save over the 35 minutes, while senior Taylor Begin (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) completed the shutout with 35 minutes of untested work. Boyer finished with 25 stops for Salem State.

Fitchburg State finished the contest with a 45-7 margin in shots and 14-0 advantage in corners.
