Worcester State Ousts Fitchburg State, 3-1

Jacobs nets conference leading 22nd goal of the year in Falcons season-ending loss

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 29, 2011) – Senior Samantha Janda (Sterling, Mass.) tallied one goal and one assist to help Worcester State to a 3-1 victory over Fitchburg State in Little East Conference field hockey action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

With the triumph, Worcester State (10-7, 6-5 LEC) earns its first LEC Tournament berth since 2008, while Fitchburg State concludes its season with an overall record of 8-9 and a 4-6 mark in the conference.

The Lancers used three first half goals to earn their tenth victory of the season as Janda registered the first tally of the game just 10:18 into the contest. The senior forward used a pass from classmate Haley Erickson (Saugus, Mass.) and sent a shot from the left side of the field for the first score of the game.

Less than six minutes later, Janda assisted on the eventual game-winning goal when she sent a cross from the right side to freshman Kelli McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) for the Lancers second score of the contest. Worcester added its final goal in the closing seconds of the first half as senior Lauren Daley (Dedham, Mass.) converted a penalty corner for her first marker of the season.

Fitchburg State notched its lone goal at the 44:51 mark of the second half when senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) intercepted a pass in the backfield and launched a shot from the right side of the box shot for her LEC leading 22nd goal of the year.

Jacobs' goal concluded the Falcons scoring for the game however as Worcester State junior Rebecca Mullen (Peabody, Mass.) made five saves in net for the Lancers, including a pair of second half stops. Fitchburg State senior goal-keeper Taylor Begin (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) stopped six shots in her complete game effort for the Falcons.
