Bridgewater State Downs Fitchburg State, 8-1

Kelley collects lone goal for the Falcons

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (September 22, 2012) – Senior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass./Fiskdale) tallied nine points on a career high four goals and one assist as the Bridgewater State field hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 8-1 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.

Bridgewater State registered the first four goals of the contest on its way to a 6-1 margin at intermission. Following a Farland goal just 7:05 into the game, junior Demi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass./Centerville) notched three straight goals in a span of just under three and half minutes to put the Bears up 4-0.

Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence (4-1) in the 24th minute as senior forward Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) connected for her team leading seventh goal of the season before Farland capped the first half scoring with back-to-back scores at the 26:37 and 30:03 marks.

In the second half, the Bears made it 7-1 on a Farland penalty stroke in the 49th minute, before junior Carissa Vizakis (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham) capped the Bridgewater State scoring with her forth score of the season roughly seven minutes later.

Throughout the match, Bridgewater State out shot Fitchburg State 25-4, while limiting the Falcons to just three penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and freshman Judith Valentin (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) combined to make ten stops for the Falcons, while junior Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made one second half save for the Bears.

Fitchburg State (4-3, 1-2 LEC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it hosts Eastern Connecticut State University at 6 p.m. Bridgewater State (6-1, 3-0 LEC) will visit Wheaton College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
