Holewa collects five saves for the Falcons

NASHUA, N.H. (October 11, 2012) – Senior Melissa Kelly (Hill, N.H./Franklin) scored the game-winning marker in the 53rd minute as Daniel Webster edged Fitchburg State, 1-0 in non-conference field hockey action this afternoon.

Daniel Webster broke the 0-0 stalemate with just under 18 minutes remaining in regulation as Kelly notched her first collegiate goal. The senior midfielder redirected a pass from freshman Taylor St. Jean (Manchester, N.H./Central) into the back of the cage for the 1-0 advantage.

Fitchburg State pressed late in the frame as senior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and sophomore Kaitlyn Silva (West Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) each had shots in close, but the Eagles defense held strong to secure the victory.

In the opening frame, Fitchburg State came out firing, hold a 9-1 margin in shots, but Eagle goaltender Danielle Melanson (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) kept the Falcons off the board, finishing with seven first half saves to preserve the 0-0 deadlock going into the break.
