Fitchburg State Falls to Plymouth State, 3-2

Holewa registers 16 saves in Falcons LEC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 6, 2012) – Junior Jackie Morin (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) notched the game-winning marker with just under 14 minutes remaining in regulation as the Plymouth State field hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 3-2 in Little East Conference actions this morning.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the 14th minute of action as senior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) notched her team-leading 12th tally of the season. The senior forward streaked up the middle of the field and beat Panther goalie Katlyn Hall (Greenfield, N.H./ConVal) to the right side for the 1-0 margin.

Plymouth State responded late in the half, when senior Olivia Colborn (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountain) fired a shot from the top of the circle off an assist from junior Lauren Carroll (Rollinsford, N.H./White Mountain) to knot the score (1-1) heading into halftime.

Following the break, the Falcons regained the lead at the 50:20 mark as freshman Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) took a feed from sophomore Bryana McGrath (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) and slipped the ball inside the near post for the 2-1 advantage.

The Panthers quickly tied the score 2-2 less than three minutes later when sophomore Tayla Corrado (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) blasted a shot from the right side of circle into the back of the net. Before Morin completed the comeback in the 57th minute as she notched her first tally of the season resulting in the 3-2 final.

Throughout the match, Plymouth State held a commanding 29-9 advantage in shots, while limiting Fitchburg State to just five penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) recorded 16 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Hall made four stops for Plymouth State in 70 minutes of work.

Fitchburg State (5-6, 2-5 LEC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Daniel Webster College at 4 p.m. Plymouth State (7-4, 5-2 LEC) will host Endicott College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
