Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Regis, 4-0

Morrissey and Nunes collect first collegiate markers for the Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 18, 2012) – The Fitchburg State field hockey defeated Regis College, 4-0 in non-conference field hockey action at Elliot Field this evening.

After one period of play, Fitchburg State held a 1-0 advantage as freshman Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) connected for her first collegiate score. Morrissey took a feed from senior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and slipped the ball inside the near post for the Falcons one goal lead.

In the second stanza, the Falcons upped their lead (2-0) at the 35:58 mark as Kelley fired a shot from the left of the circle and connected for her team leading sixth tally of the season. The Green and Gold made it 3-0 on a Mary-Anne Goodsell(W. Springfield, Mass./White Oaks) tally in the 57th minute before sophomore Amber Nunes (W. Wareham, Mass./New Bedford) capped the Fitchburg State scoring with her first score of the season just seven minutes later.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State dominated the offensive end, out-shooting Regis 32-9, while holding a 10-7 margin in penalty corners. Between the pipes, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) registered four saves in 66 minutes of work for the Falcons, while junior Morgan Mitchell (Ashburnham, Mass./Oakmont Regional) made 11 second half stops for the Pride.

Fitchburg State (4-2, 1-1 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it visits Bridgewater State University at 3 p.m. Regis (0-6, 0-0 NECC) will travel to Gordon College on Tuesday for a match starting at 7 p.m.
