Southern Maine Ousts Fitchburg State, 4-3

Kelley collects hat trick for the Falcons

PORTLAND, Maine. (October 20, 2012) – Senior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) registered her second hat trick of the season, but the rally fell just short as Southern Maine defeated  Fitchburg State, 4-3 in Little East Conference field hockey action this afternoon.

In the first stanza, Southern Maine open the scoring in the fifth minute of play as sophomore Peyton Dostie's (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) redirection off the stick of junior Cristina Mountain (Dexter, Maine/Dexter Regional) found the back of the cage for the Huskies early 1-0 advantage. Southern Maine doubled its lead nearly eight minutes later as sophomore Annabelle Frenette (Old Orchard Beach Maine/Old Orchard Beach) notched her first score of the season.

Southern Maine tacked on two more goals in a span of five minutes following the half-time intermission as Dostie and junior Stephanie Lomasney (York, Maine/York) hit back-to-back scores for a 4-0 Husky lead.

Despite trailing by four, Fitchburg State rallied back, pulling within a goal thanks to the heroics of Kelley. The senior forward broke Fitchburg State's scoring silence (4-1) in the 49th minute of play as she streaked down the middle of the field and beat Southern Maine goalie Lindsey Fortin (Berwick, Maine/Noble) one on one. Kelley notched her second score of the game at the 67:41 mark, before Kelley completing the hat trick just 30 second later.

The Falcons scoring surge was cut short down the stretch however as the Husky defense stood strong and kept the Falcons silent for the final two minutes. Throughout the match, Southern Maine out shot Fitchburg State, 21-11 while holding an 8-3 margin in penalty corners.

In the cage, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) turned away 12 shots in the complete game effort for the Falcons, freshman Casey White (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) made 3 saves in 22 minutes of work for Southern Maine.
