Fitchburg State Blanks Becker, 2-0

Bush collects three points in Falcons second straight victory

LEICESTER, Mass. (September 26, 2013) – Senior midfielder Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass.) registered three points on one goal and one assist as the Fitchburg State field hockey team defeated Becker College, 2-0 in non-conference action this afternoon at Alumni Field.

Following a scoreless first half, Fitchburg State broke a 0-0 stalemate in the 35th minute of action as freshman forward Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) redirected a shot off the stick of Bush into the lower right corner of the cage, for her third tally of the season to put the Falcons up 1-0.

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead at the 58:23 mark when Bush gathered a feed from sophomore forward Julia Gimenez (Framingham, Mass.) and fired the ball into the left side of the net for her fourth marker of the season.

In the first period of play, Fitchburg State nearly took the lead in the opening minutes of play as Bush and Stearns both posted shots on frame that were stopped by Hawks goalie Gabrielle Gallo (Northport, N.Y.).

While Becker's best offensive chance of the stanza came at the 11:24 mark when senior Michelle Griczika (Barre, Mass.) broke through the defense and blasted a pair of point blank shots on goal, but Fitchburg State net-minder Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) turned aside both opportunities to preserve the 0-0 deadlock going into the break.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State out-shot Becker 18-5, while also holding a10-5 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, Holewa finished with four saves in 70 minutes of work for the Falcons, while Gallo totaled 11 stops in the complete game effort for the Becker.

Fitchburg State (4-3, 0-2 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State at 6 p.m. Becker College (0-10. 0-0 NECC) will visit Lasell College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
