Keene State Blanks Fitchburg State, 6-0

Holewa registers 14 saves for the Falcons

KEENE, N.H. (September 14, 2013) – Freshman Kayla Renaud (Somers, Conn.) collected her first hat trick of the season as Keene State defeated Fitchburg State, 6-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action this afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex.

In the opening frame, Keene State took the lead at the 15:31 mark as senior Katlyn Simula (Bridgewater, N.H.) successfully converted a penalty stroke as she fired the ball into the upper left corner of the cage for the 1-0 advantage.

The Owls doubled their margin (2-0) in the 28th minute of play when Renaud collected a loose ball off her own rebound and tucked the ball inside the near post for her second tally of the season. Keene State upped its lead less than three minutes later as Renaud received a pass from freshman Sami Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) and fired a shot into the back of the cage for her second score of the contest.

Renaud completed the hat trick at the 30:32 mark when senior Aimee Donaruma (Hampden, Mass.) crossed a pass to Renaud, who then blasted a shot inside the far post to make the score 4-0 before sophomore Lyndsie Rabenius (North Hampton, N.H.) added her fifth marker on the year for the 5-0 lead going into the break.

Following intermission, Keene State capped its scoring at the 61:56 mark as sophomore Paige Tuttle (Goffstown, N.H.) slipped the ball inside the left post for her first goal of the season, resulting in the 6-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Keene State controlled the offensive front, out shooting Fitchburg State 45-2, while limiting the Falcons to just one penalty corner. In the cage, junior Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) registered 14 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while senior back Kelly Finn (Fitchburg, Mass.) aided the Fitchburg State defense, registering five defensive saves including three in the opening 35 minutes of play.

Fitchburg State (1-2, 0-1 LEC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it visits Regis College at 7 p.m. Keene State (6-0, 1-0 LEC) is off until next Saturday when it hosts Bridgewater State at 1:30 p.m.
