Eastern Connecticut Tops Fitchburg State, 1-0

Holewa and Valentin combine to make six save for Falcons 

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team was in action this evening, dropping a tough 1-0 decision to Eastern Connecticut State in Little East Conference field hockey action at Elliot Field.

In the first frame, Fitchburg State nearly opened the scoring six minutes into the contest as junior forward Erin Morrissey and freshman Bailey Miller each fired shots on goal, but Warriors netminder Samantha Scavo denied both opportunities to preserve the 0-0 stalemate..

Eastern Connecticut grabbed the lead at the 19:10 mark when junior back Mackenzie Brower blasted a shot into the back the net for her first tally of the season on an unassisted goal for the 1-0 advantage.

Following the intermission, the Falcons turned up the offensive pressure as Miller and classmate Casey Noonan had back-to-back point blank chances in the 53rd minute of action, but Scavo made a pair of sprawling saves as the Warriors defense was able to hold off Fitchburg State throughout the rest of the stanza, resulting in the 1-0 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a slim 12-10 advantage in shots, while also holding a 6-5 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Lucy Holewa and junior Judith Valentin combined to make six saves for Fitchburg State, while Scavo made seven stops in the complete game effort for the Warriors.

Fitchburg State (4-5, 1-3 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts the Rams of Framingham State University at 10 a.m. Eastern Connecticut State (6-3, 3-1 LEC) will travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
