Stearns notches lone marker for Falcons
DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore forward Tatum Seaver collected two goals as the Western Connecticut State field hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1 in Little East Conference (LEC) action this evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
In the first half, Fitchburg State took the lead just 7:58 into the frame as sophomore forward Stephanie Stearns gathered a rebounded shot of the stick of senior Kaitlyn Silva and fired a shot inside the far post for the 1-0 margin.
The Colonials knotted the score (1-1) in the 26th minute when sophomore Tatum Seaver collected a loose ball off a penalty corner and slipped the ball into the back of the net for her sixth tally on the season.
Western Connecticut State grabbed the lead less than four minutes later as Seaver received a feed from junior Morgan O'Dell and blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the cage for her second goal of the contest for the 2-1 advantage going into the break.
Following Intermission, the Green and Gold nearly retied the contest the 40:38 mark when Stearns and sophomore Madeline Hoffman both fired shots on target but Colonials netminder Kristy Trotta was able to deny both scoring opportunities, resulting in the 2-1 final.
Throughout the match, Western Connecticut State held 14-8 advantage in shots, while limiting the Falcons to three penalty corners. In the cage senior Lucy Holewa and junior Judith Valentin combined to stop ten shots for Fitchburg State, while Trotta registered seven saves for the Colonials in the complete game effort.
Fitchburg State (5-9, 1-7 LEC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Western Connecticut State (9-5, 6-2 LEC) will host Eastern Connecticut State on Tuesday for a match starting at 7 p.m.
