Fitchburg State Edged By Plymouth State, 2-1

Morrissey notches first goal on the season in conference setback

PLYMOUTH, N.H.  – Fitchburg State dropped a 2-1 decision to the Panthers of Plymouth State University in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action this afternoon at the New Hampton School.

In the opening frame, Plymouth State took the lead with just over a minute remaining in the first half as junior forward Nicole Burgess fired a shot into the back of the cage for her second tally on the season to put the Panthers up 1-0 going into the break.

Following intermission, the Falcons knotted the score (1-1) at the 55:49 mark when senior forward Erin Morrissey deposited the ball inside the far post for her first score of the 2015 campaign as newcomer Molly Richard found Morrissey at the top of the circle to pick up the assist.

The hosts regained the lead for good seven minutes later as sophomore forward Lily Davis slipped a shot into the left side of the cage for her second goal of the year, resulting in the 2-1 final as the Panthers defense was able to hold off the Falcons for the remaining eight minutes.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 15-8 margin in shot, while the Panther finished with a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners. In the cage, the duo of senior Judith Valentin and freshman Brittany Linane combined for four saves for Fitchburg State, while sophomore Alivia Bates stopped six shots for the Panthers in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (1-2, 0-1 LEC) returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Rivier to take on the Raiders at 6 p.m. Plymouth State (2-1, 1-0 LEC) will host Castleton on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to resume their game suspended with 25:43 remaining in the second half Wednesday evening.
