UMass Dartmouth Shoots Past Fitchburg State, 3-0

Valentin turns away six shots in Falcons LEC setback

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Fitchburg State dropped a 3-0 decision to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference field hockey action this afternoon at Cressy Field.

Following a scoreless first half, Fitchburg State nearly opened the scoring in the 43rd minute of action when sophomore midfielder Kerra Anastasia blasted a shot that got past Corsair keeper Allison Burke, but classmate Haley Donahay cleared it off the goal line, to preserve the 0-0 deadlock.

UMass Dartmouth took the lead at the 46:50 mark as sophomore forward Delaney Burns fired a shot into the back of the cage for her fourth marker on the season for the 1-0 lead.

The Corsairs doubled its advantage (2-0) when sophomore Erin Kish redirected a shot off the stick of senior Emily Anderson for her sixth goal on the year. Junior Hunter Carden inserted the ball to Anderson at the top circle, before Kish tipped home the shot.

The hosts added an insurance marker with 13 minutes remaining in the contest as Kish struck for her second goal of the match off an assist from senior midfielder Ali Ladue, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the contest, UMass Dartmouth held a 17-3 advantage in shots, while also holding a 23-4 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Judith Valentin made six stops in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while Burke went untested in net for the Corsais.

Fitchburg State (3-4, 0-3 LEC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Westfield State to take on the Owls at 7 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (6-2, 3-0 LEC) will visit Worcester State on Tuesday for a contest starting at 7 p.m.
