Fitchburg State Falls At Westfield State, 2-1

Richard collects lone goal for Falcons in LEC setback

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team was in action this evening, suffering a tough 2-1 setback to the Owls of Westfield State University in Little East Conference action this evening at Alumni Field.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring at the 21:14 mark of the first half as freshman midfielder Molly Richard blasted a shot inside the far post off an assist from sophomore Bailey Miller for her second marker of the season for the 1-0 margin after 35 minutes of play.

Following the break, the Owls knotted the score (1-1) in the 37th minute of play when junior Meg Doherty slide pass over to classmate Jenelle Juskiewicz, who tucked the ball into the left side of the cage for her second goal on the year.

Westfield State secured the win with just under three minutes remaining in the game as junior forward Holly Brouillette deposited the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading tenth marker of the 2015 campaign to make the score 2-1.

The Falcons threatened in the winding minutes when Richard and senior forward Julia Gimenez each put shot on frame, but Owls keeper Megan Fountaine turned away both shots, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State held a slim 18-17 margin in shots, the penalty corner were even at 5-5. In the cage, newcomer Brittany Linane finished with nine saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Fountaine stopped 14 shots for Westfield State.

Fitchburg State (3-5, 0-4 LEC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Regis College for a contest starting at 4 p.m. Westfield State (5-3, 3-1 LEC) will host Keene State College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
