Richards and Gimenez score for the Falcons in senior day victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Freshman Molly Richards and senior Julia Gimenez each tallied their tenth goals of the season as Fitchburg State defeated the Huskies of Southern Maine 2-1 in a Little East Conference matchup at Elliot Field this afternoon on Senior Day.

The contest opened with a strong showing of defense by both teams, with the Huskies getting the first big chance of the contest in the 17th minute, as sophomore Kaylie Andrews put a shot to the goal that had to be cleared away by Falcon senior Kelly Luttazi for the defensive save.

The Falcons would open the scoring in the 26th minute, as Richard collected a rebound off of a shot by classmate Maggie Gallagher, and put it past Huskies keeper Amanda Kasbohm.

Shortly after the break, the Green and Gold struck again to make it 2-0, as Gimenez picked up a loose ball and tucked it into back of the cage for her tenth maker on the season.

Southern Maine would get on the board in the 53rd minute, as Andrews picked up a rebound from an Allison Ward shot and put it past Falcon goalie Judith Valentin, to make it a 2-1 contest.

The Huskies would get a few more opportunities in the contest, but Valentin and the rest of the Falcon defense was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.

Throughout the contest, Southern Maine held a 13-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a narrow 7-6 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, Valentin collected six saves for the Falcons en-route to her seventh win on the season, while Kasbolhm stopped three shots for the Huskies in the complete game effort.

Prior to the contest, the Fitchburg State field hockey team honored three seniors playing in their final regular season home contest as seniors Kelly Luttazi, Julia Gimenez, and Judith Valentin were honored for their contributions to the program.

With the win, Fitchburg State (10-8, 4-7 LEC) secured the eighth seed in the upcoming LEC post-season tournament traveling to top seeded Plymouth State on Tuesday, while Southern Maine concludes its 2015 campaign with an overall record of 8-12 and a 4-7 clip within conference play.
