Bryant makes 12 saves for Fitchburg State in non-conference setback

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team suffered a tough 2-0 setback to the Hawks of Roger Williams in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 0, Roger Williams 2

Records: Fitchburg State (1-3) | Roger Williams (3-2)

How It Happened

Roger Williams nearly grabbed the lead at the 30:00 mark as junior Anna Vasaturo (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) fired a shot on frame, but Fitchburg State sophomore Chloe Gladu (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) made a clutch defensive save for the Falcons to preserve the 0-0 stalemate going into the half.

Following the break, the Hawks took the lead in the 38:14 mark when freshman Hannah Palmer (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) gathered a loose ball in front of the net and deposited as shot into the back of the cage for her second marker of the season for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State nearly knotted the score minutes later as senior Molly Richard (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernard's) and junior Aislinn DeHorsey (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) registered back-to-back shots on frame, but Roger Williams goaltender Callie Flanagan (Wenham, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) denied both shots to keep the score at 1-0.

Roger Williams doubled its advantage in the 53rd minute of the contest when junior Alex Coppinger (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) collected a feed from senior Callie Chase (Contoocook, N.H./Hopkinton Middle) and found the back of the net for her first score of the 2018 campaign, resulting in the 2-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest will mark the fourth meeting between the two teams in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons currently 1-3 all-time when taking on the Hawks.

In the cage, freshman Abby Bryant (Ware, Mass./Quabbin Regional) stopped 12 shots for the Falcons in the setback, while Flanagan made three saves for the Hawks in the victory.

Richard and DeHorsey combined for four shots to lead the way for Fitchburg State.

Roger Williams held a 22-4 margin in shots, while also finishing with a slim 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.
