Falcons Rally Past Vikings, 4-3

Barnaby registers first collegiate tally in LEC victory

Salem, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team earned a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Vikings of Salem State University this afternoon in Little East Conference (LEC) action at Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Salem State opened the scoring at the 23:40 mark as junior midfielder Emily Rapoza (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) gathered a feed from classmate Vanessa Yavorski (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) and found the back of the net for her second tally of the season for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) 17 seconds later when junior forward Aislinn DeHorsey (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) received  a pass from senior Molly Richard (Leominster, Mass./St. Bernard's) and deposited a shot inside the near post for her third marker of the year.

Following the break, the Falcons took the lead in the 41st minute of play as DeHorsey connected on her second goal of the contest before the Green and Gold upped their margin (3-1) 23 seconds later when freshman Emma Barnaby (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) struck for her first collegiate marker.

The Vikings answered back to knot the score (3-3) with back-to-back scores in a span of 2:45 as junior Cassie Curtin (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) struck for her first score of the year at the 48:34 mark before sophomore Jillian Dalton (Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham) added her first of the season.

Fitchburg State regained the lead with just over six minutes left in regulation when sophomore Chloe Gladu (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) netted her first goal of the 2018 season, resulting in the 4-3 final.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest will mark the 39th meeting between the two squads in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons currently 16-21-2 all-time when taking on the Vikings.

Fitchburg State has won nine of the last ten contests against Salem State, including an 8-3 decision last season at Alumni Field.

In the cage, freshman Abby Bryant (Ware, Mass./Quabbin Regional) recorded four saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while newcomer Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) stopped three shots for the Vikings in 70:00 minutes of action.

DeHorsey registered a game-best four shots for Fitchburg State in the contest.

Fitchburg State finished with a slim 10-8 advantage in shots, while Salem State held a 13-4 margin in penalty corners.

Up Next

Falcons will travel to Plymouth State on Wednesday to take on the Panthers for an LEC bout, starting at 6:00 PM. Vikings will visit Eastern Connecticut State on the same day for a conference matchup with a 4:30 pm start.
