Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team fell to the Engineers of WPI, 8-0 in non-conference action this afternoon at Elliot Field

How It Happened

WPI jumped on the scoreboard quickly in the first quarter. Senior Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, Mass.) tipped in an initial drive from classmate Shannon Hynes (Auburn, Mass.) off an offensive penalty corner at the 5:18 mark.

The Engineers double the lead at 17:35 when senior Carly Cidado (Easton, Mass.) collected a pass from Sullivan for her fourth tally on the season.

Following the break the visitors increased the lead (3-0) off the stick of junior Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, Mass). The junior collected a loose ball in front of Falcons netminder freshman Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) for her team-leading fifth goal.  O'Sullivan notched another score in the third frame to push the lead for Engineers to 4-0.

Sullivan scored her second of the game and senior Paris Lopez (Smithfield, RI) scored on a penalty stroke to move the score to 6-0.  WPI scored two late goals for the 8-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

This afternoon's contest will mark the 13th meeting between Fitchburg St. and WPI in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons currently 3-10-0 all-time when taking on the Engineers.

WPI held the advantage in shots (28-4) and penalty corners (10-2).

WPI goaltender Ali Gannon (Freemont, NH) earned her sixth win of the season in 45 minutes of action. Lamprey stopped 15 shots in the loss.

Falcons will host the Raiders of Rivier University on Thursday evening for a non-conference matchup starting at 7:00 PM. WPI will travel to Wellesley on Saturday for a NEWMAC conference tilt at noon.
