Fitchburg notch first conference win in LEC Clash

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team scored the 2-1 shootout victory over the Owls of Westfield State University in Little East Conference (LEC) action this evening at Elliot Field.

The Basics
Score: Fitchburg State 2, Westfield State 1 (SO)
Records: Fitchburg State (2-11, 1-6 LEC) | Westfield State (4-9, 1-5 LEC)

How It Happened
Westfield's best opportunity of the first half occurred in the second quarter when sophomore Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) redirected a pass from outside the circle, however freshman Falcon netminder Colleen Lamprey (Cherry Valley, Mass.) made a spectacular save to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

Fitchburg State notched the only marker of the first half with just 3 ticks on the clock. Executing their only offensive corner of the frame, freshman Hannah Walters (Danielson, Conn.) tipped in her first collegiate tally off an initial drive from the top of the circle from classmate Sophia Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass.).

Following a scoreless 3rd period, the Owls tied the game with just over three minutes remaining in the contest. Freshman Sophie Morini (Florence, Mass.) nicked a crossing pass to sophomore Allie Giguere (Lynn, Mass.) who deposited the ball into the open net for her sixth goal of the season.

After a pair of scoreless overtime periods the teams headed to shootout. Both teams notched goals in round one with Sousa and Latona scoring respectively. Junior Sophia Laperle (Auburn, Mass.) opened round two with a goal for the Falcons, while Lamprey shut the door on the Westfield attempt.  Senior Olivia Grant (Portsmouth, NH) sealed the victory for the green and gold in round four.
