Falcons Earn 3-1 Triumph Over Pilgrims In Season Opener

Miller and Bergeman net first collegiate scores for Fitchburg State in non-conference victory

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State ice hockey team defeated the Pilgrims of New England College, 3-1 in non-conference action this evening from the Wallace Civic Center as the Falcons opened their 2019-20 season.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring 8:51 into the first period as junior forward Joseph Miller (Malton, N.J.) gathered a feed from classmates Kevin Perry (Hull, Mass.) and Brian Glover (Baldwinville, Mass.) and deposited a shot into the upper right corner for his first collegiate tally for the 1-0 edge.

In the second period, the Green and Gold doubled their advantage with 31 seconds left in the frame when freshman Rece Bergeman (Hillsdale, N.J.) connected on his first collegiate maker on assists from seniors Dean Zerby (Harrisburg, Penn,) and Joshua Suboyu (Bradley Beach, N.J.).

The Falcons upped its lead early in the third frame with senior Christopher Vicario (Cranston, R.I.) netting a power-play marker after settling a feed from newcomer Hunter Fortin (Westville, Ohio) and sophomore Ryan Murphy (Wayzata, Minn,) to make the score 3-0.

New England College cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 3:37 mark as sophomore Trevor Momot (Milford, Mich.) received a pass from junior Nicholas Rein (Calgary, Alb.) netted his first collegiate score with a power-play tally, resulting in the 3-1 final.
