Falcons Fall to Corsairs in MASCAC Semifinals

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-0 to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) semifinal tournament action this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

How It Happened

In a fast paced, up and down affair the Corsairs notched the only score of the first period. Freshman Austin Miller's (Meriden, Idaho) shot from the right wing broke through junior Brian McGrath's (Worcester, Mass.) pads and senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, NY) poked the loose puck into the net for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Wyatt Wilmshurst (Massena, NY) had the best chance for the Falcon when his chip shot from the slot clanked off the inside left post.

UMass Dartmouth converted on the man-advantage just 1:49 into the second frame to double the score. First-year Michael Perrone (Mt. Sinai, NY) found junior Dillon Radin (Long Beach, NY) for his 13th goal of the season and a 2-0 lead. The Green and Gold mustered six shots on net in the stanza, freshman Anthony Ceolin (Simsbury, Conn.) had the hosts best opportunity with another shot off the post after beating UMD netminder freshman Daniel Davidson (Surrey, BC).  

Senior Patrick Wrenn (Charlestown, Mass.) sealed the victory for the Corsairs as he broke down the left wing and wristed a shot top-shelf to push the score to 3-0, next Leonard notched his second of the night three minutes later for the final.

Insidethe Numbers

  • The Corsairs held a slight margin (41-32) in shots
  • UMD was 1-for-3 on the power-play while the Falcons were 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.
  • McGrath stopped 28 saves in the setback.
  • Davidson finished with 41 saves in the win.
