WPI Rallies Past Fitchburg State, 3-2

Mountain leads Falcons with a game-high four points

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 15, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team fell to WPI, 3-2, in a hard fought non-conference match up this evening at Elliot Field. WPI rallied from a two goal deficit to earn its seventh victory of the season.

Freshman Brian Mountain (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) led the Fitchburg State offensive front with a season-high, two goals scored, while sophomore Danny Angelosanto (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) chipped in with one assist.

Junior Evan Demers-Peel (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) paced the WPI attack with three points on one goal and one assist, while senior captain Ben Glide (Manchester, N.H./Central) and sophomore Thomas Cucinotta (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) added one goal apiece.

Fitchburg State came out firing, maintaining possession through the first half of play before Mountain connected for his first score of the game to give the Falcons an early 1-0 edge. Mountain took a cross pass from Angelosanto and redirected it for his second goal of the season.

In the second half, Fitchburg State increased its lead to 2-0 as Mountain hustled to steal sophomore goalkeeper Kirk Dragsbaek's (Sherborn, Mass./Dover-Sherborn Regional) goal-kick and net his second goal of the match.

Fitchburg State controlled the tempo if the first part of the second frame as Mountain had two scoring opportunities sail wide. WPI rallied midway through the second period to tie the game at 2-2 before clinching the victory with 2:11 remaining in regulation. Glide put the Engineers on the board with his fifth goal of the season before Demers-Peel tied the contest in the 79th minute. Cucinotta secured the victory for WPI, connecting for his first collegiate goal in the 88th minute.

WPI held a slim 17-14 advantage in shots, but Fitchburg State pressured the Engineer defense with a 6-3 advantage in corners. Junior goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) totaled four saves in net for the Falcons, while sophomore Paul Moan (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) earned the victory in relief with two saves.

Fitchburg State (4-7-1, 0-3-1 MASCAC) is back in action on Saturday as it travels to Mass-Maritime at 12 p.m. WPI (7-6-0, 0-4-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Babson College next Saturday at 12 p.m.
