Clark Sneaks Past Fitchburg State, 1-0 (OT)
Carey collected eight saves in Falcons' extra frame setback
FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 1, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 overtime setback to Clark University in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.
Sophomore Jeremy Radovsky (South San Francisco, Calif./Drew School) scored the lone goal for Clark in the extra frame off an assist from classmate Devin Weafer (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel).
The first half remained even as Clark held a slim 4-3 edge in shots. Fitchburg State pressured late in the half with several shots on net, including a touch shot by sophomore Danny Angelosanto (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) off a Falcon corner that sailed just high over the Clark net.
Both teams had many scoring opportunities in the second frame, with 15 total shots between both teams. Junior Kyle Klapp (Schenectady, N.Y./Guilderland) and senior Mike Trobagis (Acton, Mass./Acton) blasted shots on Falcon goaltender Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford), who stonewalled both to silence the Cougars. Sophomore Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) led the Falcon scoring pursuit with a hard shot on net late in the frame, while junior Patrick Higgins (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) had a last ditch header with 0:14 left in regulation sail wide.
In overtime, Fitchburg State attacked first, as freshman Danny Bolam (Fletcher, Vt./BFA Airfax) had a shot roll just wide from the right channel. Moments later, Clark cleared the ball up the field to Radovsky who connected for the game-winning goal on a chip shot from about 15 yards out.
Clark pressured Fitchburg State with an 18-8 advantage in shots, but goalkeeper Matt Carey collected eight saves to pace the Falcon defense. Senior captain Peter Wise (Providence, R.I./Classical) stopped four shots for the Cougars.
Fitchburg State (4-5, 0-2 MASCAC) is back in action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State College at 4 p.m. Clark University (6-2-2, 0-1-1 NEWMAC) will travel to Springfield College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
