Mass-Maritime Sneaks Past Fitchburg State, 4-3 (2OT)

Ventura notches team-leading fifth goal of season in Falcon loss

BUZZARD'S BAY, Mass. (October 18, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a tough 4-3 setback to Mass-Maritime in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference this afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.

The Fitchburg State offense was led by the trio of sophomore Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont), senior Jeffrey Loven (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) and freshman Trevor Higgins (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) who each tallied one goal apiece.  Sophomores Joseph Daigle (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke), Danny Angelosanto (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) and Robbie Pacini (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) were also solid with one assist each.

Freshman Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) led the Mass-Maritime offensive attack with a game-high five points on two goals and one assist, while classmate Josh Hoy (Camp Hill, Penn) aided the Buccaneers with four points on one goal and two assists.

McCord gave Mass-Maritime a 1-0 advantage just 10:09 into the match with his third score of the year on an assist from Hoy, but Fitchburg State evened matters in the 35th minute when Loven converted a feed from Pacini for a 1-1 draw at the break.

Fitchburg State came out firing in the second half as Ventura gave Fitchburg State a 2-1 advantage seven minutes after intermission off a dish from Daigle. Mass-Maritime rallied back as McCord evened things for the Buccaneers just 4:55 later with his second score of the day on assists from Hoy and freshman Sean Szczesny (Whitman, Mass.). Hoy gave the hosts a 3-2 lead in the 61st minute when he lofted a shot from 35 yards out, but the Falcons forged the third tie of the day in the 75th minute when Higgins connected on a breakaway.

After 28 minutes of silent overtime play, senior Neil Carlson (Kingston, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with 1:46 remaining in the second overtime to lift Mass-Maritime to its fifth victory of the season. The Falcons had several scoring opportunities throughout the second half of the match, but senior Tim Meighan (East Bridgewater, Mass.) totaled eight saves in net to earn his third win of the season. Junior goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) notched six saves for the Falcons
