Fitchburg State Shoots Past Newbury, 6-2

Tyler leads all scorers with a game-high five points in Falcons third victory

BROOKLINE, Mass. (September 10, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team rolled to a 6-2 victory over Newbury College in non-conference action this evening at Pine Manor College.

Senior captain David Tyler (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin) paced the Fitchburg State offense, totaling five points on two goals and one assist, while sophomore Danny Angelosanto (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) collected three points on one goal and one helper. Newcomer Danny Bolam (Fletcher, Vt./BFA Fairfax) registered two assists on the day, while sophomore Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont), freshman Brian Mountain (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland), and classmate Eddie Hearn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) netted one goal apiece.

Newbury College was led by the duo of senior John Mawson (Amherst, Mass./Amherst) and freshman Andy Osei (Worcester, Mass./Burncoat) who notched one goal each.

Newbury College opened the scoring early in the 11th minute of the match on Mawson's second goal of the season but Fitchburg State rallied back with three unanswered goals to gain a 3-1 advantage. Tyler ignited the Falcon scoring surge with his third goal of the season off an assist from senior Jeffrey Loven (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) before Ventura and Hearn connected for scores midway through the period. The Nighthawks responded just 0:15 later as Osei posted his first goal of the season to cut the Falcon lead to 3-2 heading into halftime.

Fitchburg State exploded for three more goals in the second half to take a 6-2 lead and clinch its third victory of the season. Tyler started the Falcon rally again with his second score of the game in the 76th minute, while Angelosanto and Mountain combined for back to back goals in a three minute span to close out the half.

Fitchburg State controlled the pace of the match, out-shooting Newbury 27-7 with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Mass./Stratford) posted three saves in net for the Falcons, while freshman William McNally (Grafton, Mass./Marion) stopped nine shots for the Nighthawks.

Fitchburg State (3-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will travel to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday for a match starting at 1 p.m. Newbury College (0-3, 0-0 NECC) will travel to Westfield State College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
