Nichols Sneaks Past Fitchburg State, 2-1
Higgins nets first collegiate goal in Falcon loss
FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 6, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 setback to Nichols College in non-conference action this afternoon at Elliot Field.
Freshman Trevor Higgins (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) led the Fitchburg State offensive attack, scoring the lone goal for the Falcons, while sophomore Joseph Daigle (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) added an assist in the loss.
Senior captain Aaron Kelly (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover Plains) and sophomore Mark Capitano (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the Nichols scoring attack with one goal apiece, while newcomer David Johnson (Williamstown, Mass./Mount Greylock) chipped in with an assist.
Nichols opened the scoring midway through the first half as Kelly slipped a shot past Falcon goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) in the 26th minute.
Fitchburg State responded early in the second half to knot the score at 1-1 as Higgins took a Joseph Daigle pass and deposited into the back of the net for his first collegiate score. After numerous scoring opportunities by both teams, Nichols broke the scoring silence in the 79th minute as Capitano took a loose-ball rebound in front of the net and connected for his second score of the season.
Nichols outshot Fitchburg State 19-16 in the contest and gained a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Matt Carey collected five saves in net for the Falcons, while Bison freshman Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) made six stops in his first collegiate victory.
Fitchburg State (2-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will travel to Newbury College on Wednesday for a match starting at 3:30 p.m. Nichols College (1-1, 0-0 TCCC) will be back in action on Monday as it hosts Newbury College at 4 p.m.
