Fitchburg State Sneaks Past UMass Dartmouth, 2-1

Ventura leads Falcons to fourth victory of season

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (September 13, 2008) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team registered a 2-1 victory UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action this evening at Cressy Field.

Sophomore Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) led the Fitchburg State scoring surge with both Falcons goals, while senior captain Jude Connelly (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield School) added an assist.

Senior Jacob Levesque (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) scored the lone goal for UMass Dartmouth while junior Jarred Goldstein (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) chipped in with an assist.

 
LIONSO VENTURA

Fitchburg State broke the first half scoring silence late in the 44th minute of the match as Ventura connected for his first goal of the match off an assist from Connelly.

UMass Dartmouth fired back early in the second half as Levesque netted the equalizer off a dish from Goldstein, but Ventura put the Falcons on top for good, collecting his fourth goal of the season on a shot from inside the box.          

UMass Dartmouth out-shot Fitchburg State 20-11, but the Falcons gained a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Mass./Stratford) posted a season-high nine saves in net for the Falcons, while junior goalkeeper Rich Covell (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) stopped five shots for the Corsairs.

Fitchburg State (4-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will travel to host Worcester State College on Saturday at 3 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (3-2, 0-0 LEC) will travel to Salem State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
