Carey collects ten saves in Roger Williams Classic setback

BRISTOL, R.I. (September 6, 2009) - The Fitchburg State men's soccer team was blanked by Ithaca College, 2-0 in the consolation round of the Roger Williams University Classic this afternoon.

ten saves in net for the Falcons.

Ithaca received markers from freshman Fernando Casanova (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Loyola) and junior Jeff Geyer (Hebron, Conn./Rham) as the Bombers collected their first victory of the season. Freshman Ryan Norland (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) was also solid, adding one assist on the day.

Ithaca opened the scoring late in the first half as Casanova netted his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute of the match. Norland ignited the Bomber transition with a cross pass into the box before Casanova belted a one-timer past senior goalkeeper Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell). The Bombers added another score late in the match as Geyer connected on a free kick from just outside the box.

Ithaca controlled the tempo of the match, limiting Fitchburg State to only eight shots in the contest and only three on net. The Bombers posted 26 attempts throughout the day, as Carey registered a season-best ten saves in net for the Falcons. Junior keeper Justin Parlapiano (Stafford Springs, Conn./Stafford) stopped two shots in net for Ithaca.       

Fitchburg State (1-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action next Saturday as it hosts UMass Dartmouth at 11 a.m. Ithaca (1-1-1, 0-0-0 E8) will host Hamilton College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
