WPI Takes One From Fitchburg State, 1-0

Hanratty totals five stops in complete game effort for the Falcons

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 21, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team traveled to WPI this evening, falling to the Engineers 1-0 in non-conference action.

Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, Mass.) netted the only goal of the game with just over 20 minutes remaining to spark WPI to its sixth victory of the season. The Engineers, who have now won two straight, improve to 6-1 on the season while Fitchburg State dips to 0-7.

In a match that saw both teams have multiple quality scoring opportunities, Sean Galligan (Weymouth, MA) threaded a long through ball to a streaking Crevoiserat, setting up the freshman's second goal of the season. Crevoiserat's shot beat Fitchburg State keeper Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) to the far post in the 69th minute.

Fitchburg State would muster the only two remaining shots of the game but could not connect on the equalizer as the first bid was saved by WPI net-minder Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J.) and the second attempted sailed wide left of the goal.

Wong made three saves on the night to help move his overall record to 5-1 for the Crimson and Gray, while Hanratty notched five stops for Fitchburg State. Sophomore Colin Shea (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) and senior Brian Bettencourt (Norton, Mass./Norton) chipped in defensively with a pair of defensive saves.

For the contest, WPI enjoyed a 13-7 edge in shots spurred by the duo of Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) and Jason Hopkins (Mendon, Mass.), who combined to total 11 attempts.  The hosts also took four of the game's six corner kicks.

Fitchburg State (0-7-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State University at 12 p.m. WPI (6-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) will host MIT on Saturday at 5 p.m.
