Fitchburg State Battles Daniel Webster To 0-0 Deadlock

Hanratty totals a career-high 12 saves over 110 minutes of action

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 6, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team and Daniel Webster College collected their second consecutive overtime contest together as the Falcons and the Eagles battled to a 0-0 draw at Elliot Field this evening.

With the draw, Fitchburg State's record holds at 1-9-1 (0-3-0 MASCAC), while Daniel Webster post a 5-4-1 mark and a 1-1-0 mark in the NECC.

Both goaltenders were phenomenal throughout the 110 minute contest, matching each other save for save. Freshman Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) put forth a career day for the Falcons, totaling a career-high 12 saves throughout the match, while Eagles goaltender, senior Joe Keene (Bristol, N.H./Newfound) also notched 12 stops in the tie.

After a pair of scoreless periods, Fitchburg State seemingly dominated the two, ten minute overtime frames, collecting 13 shots over the 20 minutes but Keene came up strong, totaling five saves to keep the Falcons off the board.

In the closing minute, Fitchburg State came within inches of netting the game winning marker, creating a solid scoring opportunity of its ensuing corner kick. With the ball juggling in front of the net, sophomore Carmen Bordonaro (Saugus, Mass./Saugus) settled, but his attempt sailed wide left to keep the game at a 0-0 deadlock.

For the match, the Falcons held a 32-24 advantage in targets, posting a game-high 11 attempts throughout the second period. Fitchburg State also collected an 8-4 margin in corner kicks, while controlling the overtime tempo with a 4-0 advantage. Hanratty finished with one save in the extra time, while Keene connected for six saves in the second half.

Fitchburg State (1-9-1, 0-3-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Mass-Maritime Academy at 12 p.m. Daniel Webster (5-4-1, 1-1-1 NECC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Mitchell College at 12 p.m.
