Worcester State Advances Past Fitchburg State, 2-0

Hanratty totals four saves in Falcons final contest of the 2011 season

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (November 1, 2011) – The Fitchburg State men's soccer team concluded its 2011 campaign this evening, falling to Worcester State University, 2-0 at Clean Harbors Stadium in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

With the victory, third-seeded Worcester State (8-7-2, 4-2-1 MASCAC) advances to the 2011 MASCAC Men's Soccer Championships and will play second-seeded Salem State on Thursday in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Fitchburg State ends the 2011 season with an overall record of 3-13-1 with a 1-6-0 mark in the league.

After a scoreless first half of play, Worcester State touched for two goals in the second frame to earn the victory in a must win game for the Lancers. Alex Wolfel (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) registered both goal for Worcester, hitting for his first score of the game in the 57th minute and following it with an insurance marker in the 88th minute. Woffle's first score came from 25 yards out on a free kick, while his second tally came off a Falcon turnover in their own end.

Worcester State goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill) earned his 14th shutout of the season, posting give saves in the complete game effort, while freshman Aidan Hanratty (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) notched four stops in the loss for the Falcons.

For the contest, the Lancers posted a 17-11 advantage in shots, while also holding a commanding 7-0 margin in corner kicks.
